What Is a Steel Angle?

The steel angle is one of the basic building blocks of the iron and steel industry: a hot rolled structural element widely used in construction, industry and engineering.

Usually produced in an “L” shape, angles are a fundamental material for applications requiring durability and strength. Produced in alloyed or non-alloyed grades, they offer a wide range of uses thanks to their design flexibility and high mechanical properties.

Angles are an ideal choice for increasing the load-bearing capacity of structures. They are widely used to support basic structural elements such as columns and beams, and in power transmission lines to provide stability. They enable high-strength structures in engineering projects and stand out for their ease of assembly. Their durability and long service life have made them indispensable to modern industry.

Steel Angle Prices

Angle prices vary depending on the material, the production process and market conditions.

Alloyed angles are generally more expensive because they are more durable and performance-oriented. The energy costs and technological infrastructure used in production also influence pricing. Differences in thickness, width and length directly affect prices as well; for example, thicker and wider angles cost more because of their higher strength and load capacity.

Types of Steel Angles

Angles are produced in various types to suit different projects, generally shaped by the material used and the design requirements.

Alloyed angles, for example, are enriched with alloying elements such as carbon, manganese, nickel and chromium to increase strength. They are preferred in heavy industry and engineering projects that require high load capacity, such as bridges and power transmission lines, offering superior durability and service life. Alloyed grades with high corrosion resistance are also ideal for areas with harsh environmental conditions.

Non-alloyed angles are produced from standard material and, being lighter, suit applications requiring flexibility. Generally preferred in lower-cost projects, they stand out for easy transport and assembly, and are widely used as support elements in reinforced concrete structures.

Properties of Steel Angles

One of the most distinctive properties of angles is their high mechanical strength, resulting from hot rolling.

This process gives angles smooth surfaces and sharp corner lines. Alloyed angles in particular stand out for their corrosion resistance and high-strength design, making them ideal for projects carrying heavy loads; galvanising the surfaces further increases resistance to environmental effects and extends service life.

Non-alloyed angles stand out for their lighter weight and are generally preferred where easy workability is required. Lower cost and fast production are among their key advantages.

Steel Angle Sizes

Angle sizes are determined with great flexibility to meet industry demands and project requirements.

Hot rolled angles are generally produced in standard sizes designed to optimise logistics and assembly, and are available in thicknesses that meet the different load requirements of structural systems.

They are also offered in various widths and lengths: widths typically range from 30 mm to 120 mm and lengths from 5 to 12 metres. In large-scale projects, longer lengths provide logistical advantages and reduce labour during assembly. The ability to supply custom sizes according to customer needs further expands their range of use.

Uses of Steel Angles

Thanks to their durability, flexibility and versatile design, angles are used in many different sectors.

Power transmission and distribution lines are among the main areas of use, where angles provide stability and durability and contribute to the long life of energy infrastructure. In construction they play a critical role as load-bearing elements, increasing the safety and durability of large-scale projects such as bridges, skyscrapers and tunnels.

In machinery manufacturing, angles are used in the assembly of equipment and devices, providing precision and durability and making it easier to assemble complex systems.

Steel Angle Production

Angles are produced by hot rolling at high temperatures.

The steel is passed through special rolls to form the “L” shape. During production, surface quality and cross-section accuracy are checked. For alloyed angles, special alloying elements are added to enhance mechanical properties.

After production, quality control examines surface quality, cross-section accuracy and mechanical strength in detail. Once compliance with standards is confirmed, the angles are bundled and made ready for shipment.
